Not content with the Picasso museum in Paris we had to visit the Picasso museum in Barcelona which proved a treasure trove. There were a lot of his early works on display. He painted this painting Science and Charity when he was fifteen.
Not as gruesome as the dying horse, this young woman has simple and lovely lines.
This guy was a friend of Picasso's when he lived in Paris. He committed suicide two years after this portrait was painted.
This gathering of dark dudes is another early work. Picasso seemed to paint in a myriad of styles at the same time. So in the same year he was painting abstracts, classic homages to artists such as Velasquez and gaily decorated ceramics. Notice the signature at the bottom of this painting. Picasso hadn't simplified it down to the one word yet.
His enthusiasm and talent were truly amazing. He was a true genius.
And he loved sausage dogs. Lump the dachshund lived with Picasso for six years. David Duncan who wrote the book below originally owned Lump. He gave the dog to Picasso because "This was a love affair. Picasso would take Lump in his arms. He would feed him from his hand. Hell, that little dog just took over. He ran the damn house." Reminds me of a little dog I know.
