Watts Towers

Today we visited an amazing set of towers in south L.A. Some nearly a hundred years ago an Italian dude called Simon Rodia decided to build an amazing edifice in his back garden. He was inspired by the shape of a boat and set it so that it pointed towards his homeland. He built the towers out of wire and coat hangers, concrete and shells, bottles and tiles. He worked on the project for thirty years and then gave it away to his neighbour.

He made his garage doors from old mattress springs covered in concrete.

I was inspired by this dreamer to start experimenting with cement and tile sculpture. But now it's time to get ready to go to the Yacht Club for a party with dancing and a D.J. Yahoo. And then later tonight we fly to Peru. Too much fun!
